Silvertown Tunnel Cycle Shuttle Set to Transform Cross-River Travel for Cyclists

Silvertown Tunnel Cycle Shuttle Set to Transform Cross-River Travel for Cyclists
26th March 2025

Cyclists in East London will soon have a brand-new way to cross the River Thames, thanks to the launch of the Silvertown Tunnel Cycle Shuttle. This innovative service, set to begin on 7 April 2025, will provide a free, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport option for those traveling between Silvertown and North Greenwich.

A Dedicated Service for Cyclists

Unlike other cross-river options, the Silvertown Cycle Shuttle is designed exclusively for cyclists, ensuring a safe and seamless journey beneath the Thames. Operating every 12 minutes from 6:30am to 9:30pm, seven days a week, the service offers unparalleled convenience for commuters and leisure riders alike. The shuttle, which features distinctive silver and blue branding, will run for free for at least its first year.

The shuttle will cater to a wide range of cycle types, including pedal bikes, e-bikes, tricycles, folding bikes, adaptive cycles, and cargo bikes. To ensure accessibility, all cycles must adhere to specific size and weight restrictions, with a maximum length of 2.14m, width of 0.76m, height of 1.4m, and weight limit of 300kg (including rider and cargo).

Convenient and Safe Travel

The service will operate between two dedicated stops: Seagull Lane near Royal Victoria DLR station on the north side and Millennium Way near Old School Close on the south side. Pedestrians without cycles will not be permitted to use the service, but they will benefit from other improved bus links launching alongside the Silvertown Tunnel’s opening, including the new SL4 Superloop route.

Each shuttle bus will be equipped with two cycle storage bays, accommodating up to four standard cycles per bay, with additional space prioritised for non-standard cycles. Folding bikes, luggage, and accessories can be stored in designated racks. The buses are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring a lowered entry point and deployable ramp for step-free boarding. While drivers will not assist passengers in loading their bikes, the design ensures an easy and efficient boarding process.

A Step Forward for Sustainable Transport

The Silvertown Tunnel itself is expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve cross-river connectivity. It will enable Transport for London (TfL) to increase the number of bus routes in the area, with all services operating as zero-emission vehicles.

Paul Lynch, Managing Director of Stagecoach London, which will operate the service, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “This new bus service means that cyclists can also benefit from the important new transport link under the river, and we’re pleased to be entrusted with providing it by TfL.”

Lorna Murphy, Director of Buses at TfL, highlighted the shuttle’s impact on active travel: “This free service will help people cycling in East London cross the river safely and encourage more active travel across the area.”

What It Means for London Cyclists

For cyclists, the Silvertown Tunnel Cycle Shuttle marks a significant improvement in infrastructure, removing one of the barriers to cross-river travel in East London. With a high-frequency schedule, dedicated cycle facilities, and a commitment to sustainability, this service is set to become an essential link in London’s transport network.
